Sheryl Lee Ralph had a clear favorite before the 2026 Emmys, and she did not hide her feelings. The Abbott Elementary star called her sitcom the “only real comedy” among this year’s Outstanding Comedy Series nominees.
Her confidence added a little spice to an already competitive category. Unfortunately for Ralph, Abbott Elementary ultimately lost the top prize to Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay.
Sheryl Lee Ralph declared Abbott Elementary the ‘only real comedy’ in its Emmys category before losing to Widow’s Bay
Ralph spoke with E! News before Monday’s ceremony about Abbott Elementary’s nomination. “I’m looking forward to a win,” she said, before delivering her pointed assessment. “We’re the only real comedy in the category.” The remark landed amid a familiar Emmy debate. Several nominated shows had faced questions about their comedy credentials, especially The Bear.
The acclaimed series often leaned toward intense drama rather than traditional laughs.
Ralph’s confidence ultimately went unrewarded. Widow’s Bay beat Abbott Elementary, along with The Bear, Hacks, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, and Shrinking. The Apple TV series had dominated the awards conversation throughout the weekend. It entered Monday’s ceremony with eight Creative Arts Emmy wins already secured.
Then came six more victories, including Outstanding Comedy Series. That brought Widow’s Bay’s total to 14 Emmys this year. The haul made television history for a comedy. Widow’s Bay surpassed The Studio, which previously held the record with 13 wins in 2025.
The series starred Matthew Rhys, Dale Dickey, Kevin Carroll, Kate O’Flynn, and Stephen Root. Rhys played a New England island mayor dealing with a particularly cursed community. Abbott Elementary still had plenty to celebrate. The ABC mockumentary, which premiered in 2021, earned seven nominations this year.
However, Widow’s Bay also beat the sitcom for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series. That result followed the Creative Arts Emmys, where Abbott Elementary lost the same category. The series had collected four Emmys across its run. Those wins covered writing, casting, and acting, including Ralph’s 2022 victory.
Ralph previously offered a more gracious outlook before that ceremony. Speaking with NPR’s Fresh Air, she said, “Whether I get that trophy in my hand or not, I already feel like a winner.” That attitude had carried her through previous awards seasons. This time, however, her “only real comedy” prediction proved to be one Emmy-night prediction that missed.
