28 Years Later 3 may not be Danny Boyle’s immediate next project. The director recently discussed his upcoming works, but he did not mention the planned third installment. That raises questions about when the trilogy finale could move forward.
Cillian Murphy is expected to return as Jim for the third installment. The director previously confirmed that Murphy would have a major part in the story. However, Boyle’s latest comments provide no update on when he could begin work on the sequel or when the actor might return.
What Danny Boyle said about his upcoming projects after 28 Years Later
In an interview with IndieWire, Danny Boyle reflected on his recent projects and explained why he prefers challenging productions. He said, “I’m stronger when I work on material that I feel is a battle to get made.” The director added, “I like to sell something to people. You want people to see it like you see it. It’s mad, really.”
Boyle’s comments are notable because he did not mention 28 Years Later 3 while discussing his upcoming work. That does not confirm a delay, but it also does not suggest that the third movie in the trilogy is his next immediate project.
In a 2025 IndieWire interview, Danny Boyle offered a much clearer update on the film. He discussed Murphy’s involvement and said, “It doesn’t take a genius to work out there’s going to be a big role for Cillian Murphy in it.” Boyle added, “Yeah, a significant role.”
The director also teased that the story had already been mapped out, calling the planned use of Murphy’s character “clever” and “a very smart use” of the 50-year-old.
Cillian Murphy has returned as Jim in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, setting up the character for a bigger role in the third installment. Boyle’s latest interview, however, does not offer any new details about that planned storyline.
For now, 28 Years Later 3 does not have a confirmed production timeline. The director is focusing on other projects, so fans may have to wait longer for an update on the third film.
