Chris Langham has passed away at 77. The BAFTA-winning actor was popular for playing Hugh Abbott in The Thick of It. His passing was revealed this week in an obituary, which also shared the cause of death.
According to The Times of London, Langham died on June 24, 2026, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. News of his demise emerged nearly three months after his death. He is survived by five children.
Born in London on April 14, 1949, Langham built a long career in British comedy as both a writer and performer. He started as a joke writer for Spike Milligan and became the sole British writer on The Muppet Show, earning an Emmy for his work scripting characters like Miss Piggy.
Langham appeared in Monty Python’s Life of Brian and was a regular on the BBC sketch series Not the Nine O’Clock News, which helped launch Rowan Atkinson’s career. His biggest acting success came in 2005 with Armando Iannucci’s political satire The Thick of It, where he played the bumbling minister Hugh Abbott.
Langham won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Comedy Performance in 2006. Days later, he was charged with 15 counts of downloading indecent images of child abuse, including extreme material. He was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to 10 months in prison, later reduced to six months on appeal.
During his trial, Langham claimed he downloaded the images while researching a role for the BBC comedy Help. His co-star Paul Whitehouse contradicted this in court. He was placed on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and was dropped from The Thick of It.
After his release, Langham appeared in a few small projects, including 2020’s Vengeance, but his career never recovered. He maintained his innocence about his intentions, though he admitted his actions had ruined his life.
