It’s never a good idea to pretend like you don’t hear a police officer who is talking to you. But that’s what one teen driver in Oklahoma did after he was spotted driving recklessly in a parking lot and was approached by police. Instead of responding to the officers, though, he thought it was better to eat snacks and talk on his phone. Let’s just say that his night didn’t end well for him.
16-year-old driver faces six charges, including DUI
On August 21 at around 10:00 p.m., a 16-year-old driver in a black Nissan Altima caught the eye of several officers after the vehicle began swerving from side to side in a busy parking lot, according to a post from the Tulsa Police Department on its official Facebook page.
To prevent the unnamed teenager from hitting any civilians, they approached the vehicle and attempted to speak with the driver, who police say had “bloodshot, watery eyes.” Pretending to ignore the officers, the teen began snacking and talking on his phone, but he heard them well enough when they asked him to step out of the car because that’s when he shifted the car’s gear to drive.
This prompted officers to pull the door open and drag the teenager out of the driver’s seat. They put the Nissan back into park, so that it wouldn’t drift away. Despite being detained, the teenager refused to give officers information about his identity, and he didn’t have an ID on him.
Interestingly, he did comply with officers to do a breathalyzer test and blew a 0.14. In Oklahoma, drivers aged 21 and older with a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08% can be charged with a DUI. For underage drivers under 21, that limit is 0.02% under zero-tolerance rules.
As a result, the teenager was arrested and taken to the Tulsa County Jail where officers confirmed his name and age. He was booked at the Community Intervention Center and charged with a DUI, obstructing an officer, resisting an officer, driving without a driver’s license, reckless driving, and having no proof of insurance.
