It’s tough for any parent to turn their children into the police for doing a crime. Last week, we reported on a case where a mom assaulted deputies for trying to arrest her son. But when the parents of two teenagers learned they stood accused of mugging a man who was in a jacuzzi, they chose the route of tough love and had the police haul them away in handcuffs.
Both juveniles face felony charges in California
Two teenagers in California were arrested on felony charges after they were caught on surveillance cameras assaulting a man who was relaxing alone in a hot tub at Creekside Village Apartments, according to a post by the San Bernardino Police Department on its official Facebook page.
Police say the two juveniles approached the victim from behind in an “unprovoked attack.” One teen kicked the man in the head while the other grabbed his cellphone before they both fled the scene. The police obtained surveillance footage of the incident, showing one image in the post of a teen in a white shirt allegedly making a kicking motion while his accomplice moved in from behind.
But on the morning of August 21, the departments says that the parents of both juveniles turned them in and the teenagers were arrested on felony charges. It’s unclear in the post if both teens have the same parents. Either way, images show both teens being handcuffed and taken into custody by officers.
Many commenters on Facebook praised the parents for making the hard choice. One wrote, “Their parents did the right thing in a tough situation. The young men will be better off facing the consequences of their actions and hopefully this incident will mark a positive turning point in their lives.”
Another agreed that it’s better that the teens learned a hard lesson now rather than later when they are adults: “It takes great integrity for the parents to turn them in so that their children can take accountability for their actions. Nip it in the bud now before they get older and possibly do worse as adults. It’s called good parenting.”
