The Whisper Man author Alex North was left speechless when he found out that Robert De Niro had been cast in the Netflix adaptation of the book. Describing the experience as ‘extraordinary’, North revealed that he was unable to read the email delivering the news out loud, given how shocked he was. He also revealed it was the first casting news that he had received about the film.
Alex North shared his appreciation for De Niro and his filmography, stating that he could not understand how someone might not be a fan of the actor. “He’s been in so many classic films and my favorite films,” he said.
Robert De Niro joins The Whisper Man cast with Adam Scott
The film follows Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer, who must connect with his estranged ex-cop father when his son is abducted. Things start taking a turn for the worse when the kidnapping is connected to a serial killer from decades ago, simply known as The Whisper Man.
Adam Scott leads the cast as Kennedy, while Robert De Niro essays the role of his father, retired police detective Pete Willis. The cast also includes Michelle Monaghan, Michael Keaton, John Carroll Lynch, Hamish Linklater, and Owen Teague.
Alex North revealed that he had to read the email twice when he first received it. He also said, “He was the first person I learned about when I got the email. I hadn’t heard anything for quite some time before then, and suddenly, it was like, ‘Oh, Robert De Niro, signed up.’ “
Regarding what interested him about the movie, De Niro revealed that he was drawn to the emotional tension between his and Adam Scott’s characters. He said, “When I read the script, I liked the fact that there was this family drama going on between the father and the estranged son, and then the thriller aspects sort of rolled into each other. That was good.”
The Whisper Man arrives on Netflix on August 28, 2026.
