Meghan Markle has been branded a “Copycat Duchess” after her black cape-style gown drew Kate Middleton comparisons. The Duchess of Sussex wore the almost $1,800 Greta Constantine look as she attended a Canadian gala with Prince Harry. A new report claimed critics quickly linked its shoulder draping to Middleton’s recent Wimbledon outfit. The style debate placed Markle’s black-tie appearance back under royal fashion scrutiny. It also revived wider attention around the two women’s public images.
Meghan Markle accused of copying Kate Middleton’s style with cape-style gown
As per a RadarOnline report, Meghan Markle attended the David Foster Foundation event. The gala marked the foundation’s 40th anniversary in Victoria, British Columbia. She accompanied Prince Harry, wearing Greta Constantine’s “Fabrizio” gown. RadarOnline said the dress cost around $1,795. It featured “a one-shoulder asymmetric neckline” and a sweeping black fabric panel. That detail became the center of the style controversy.
Meanwhile, a palace source said the timing drove the comparison. The insider claimed Markle was called a “Copycat Duchess” because Kate Middleton had recently worn a dress with a dramatic cape effect. The source stressed the dresses were “certainly not identical.” However, the insider said the prominent shoulder draping for both, seen within weeks, would draw attention. Another source called it “unfortunate” for Markle. The insider said people began asking whether Middleton’s Wimbledon look had provided “inspiration.”
However, RadarOnline noted clear design differences between both gowns. Middleton wore a bespoke olive-green Emilia Wickstead dress at the Wimbledon men’s final. The Princess of Wales’ look featured a “cape-style overlay.” Its fabric swept across her shoulders and down her back.
By contrast, Markle’s black gown used asymmetry and a heavier sweep. A fashion source said there was still “enough crossover” for debate. Markle also wore Princess Diana’s butterfly pavé diamond earrings and a Cartier Love bracelet.
