Wachowski, of “Matrix” and “Bound” fame, is facing major roadblocks in getting her film “The Hunted” off the ground. The director is stuck needing $10 million to move the film out of the late production stage.
According to Variety, no one in Hollywood is willing to invest in the movie due to its “wall to wall” trans cast. She appeared on KCRW’s “The Business” podcast last Friday and unloaded her latest challenges. Wachowski said, “People like it, but they really don’t want to make it because it’s [got a] wall-to-wall trans cast. I have to get creative and figure out different ways that I can get this in front of people.”
The director added, “This is a script that was extremely important for me to write. It was a response to what is happening in the world for trans people, and it gave me a hugely cathartic receptacle to dump all of my anger and rage and frustration into.”
Wachowski co-wrote the project with her partner, Mickey Ray Mahoney. The movie is currently ongoing under the Anarchists United and Natasha Lyonne’s Ariadne banner. To help matters, the director gathered a live table read at Los Angeles’ Dynasty Typewriter theater from Aug. 7-8.
Wachowski said that she has to find a way to “grab that trans joy with all of my friends.” She added, “It’s not the thing that I had imagined it was going to be, but the end result is the same.”
Wachowski has worked alongside her sister Lana Wachowski and risen to fame with blockbusters under her belt. In the 1990s, she directed the hugely popular “Matrix,” followed by sequels like “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions.”
The pair also directed the cult classic “Speed Racer,” “Cloud Atlas” and “Jupiter Ascending.”
