David Mitchell’s puzzles just got a lot more dangerous. The BBC unveiled a new Ludwig Season 2 trailer, hinting at missing detectives and high-ranking cover-ups.
BBC releases new Ludwig Season 2 trailer
The BBC released the official trailer for Ludwig Season 2 on August 10 through its Media Centre. David Mitchell returns as master puzzle-setter John “Ludwig” Taylor in the hit comedy drama series. All six episodes will drop on BBC iPlayer starting August 20.
John Taylor now works as a crime scene consultant for the Cambridge Police Authority. He partners with DCI Russell Carter, played by Dipo Ola, to tackle “impossible” crimes. The BBC describes the new season’s stakes as involving “missing detectives, multiple murders and high-ranking cover-ups.”
Mitchell’s character no longer impersonates his identical twin brother, DCI James Taylor. However, James remains missing throughout the new season. John and his sister-in-law Lucy, played by Anna Maxwell Martin, continue searching for answers. The BBC teases that “one masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.”
Several new cast members join the show for its second outing. Mark Bonnar, Sian Clifford, Ben Ashenden, and Rumi Sutton all appear as series regulars. Karl Pilkington also features as guest star DI Matt Neville in the upcoming season.
The first season earned strong critical acclaim and commercial success after premiering in September 2024. It recorded almost 10 million viewers during its first month on air. The show also won Best Comedy Series at the 53rd International Emmy Awards in November 2025. It holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 31 reviews.
The BBC confirmed in July 2026 that Ludwig had already received a third series commission. Filming for Season 2 commenced in September 2025 across London and Cambridge. Mark Brotherhood returns as the sole writer for the new season.
