Ted Lasso’s new cast additions reveal that they faced some unexpected hurdles when joining for Season 4. The Apple TV series initially wrapped its primary narrative arc at the end of the third season. However, Ted Lasso Season 4 brings new cast members, including Tanya Reynolds, Abbie Hern, Jude Mack, and Faye Marsay.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the new members revealed the biggest challenges they faced during the production of Season 4. One of their biggest challenges was jumping into a cohesive cast full of Emmy winners and learning how to play football.
Hern recalled their early training: “Our bootcamp started with just the actors, and we were like, ‘We’re really good at this,’ And then they brought in the—”
“Proper ones?” her co-star, Hannah Waddingham, chimed in while laughing.
The real test began when the cast played alongside actual pros, quickly leaving the newcomers out of breath. However, Marsay added that she felt “terrified” every time she stepped on set, noting, “It’s kind of intimidating.”
The Game of Thrones star revealed feeling like an imposter on set. In response, the existing cast member Waddingham said, “We felt just as much imposter syndrome coming back into season 4 maintaining what we’d done as you guys joining.”
She also explained that the existing cast members did not have it “sorted out,” since the new season also welcomes a new plot structure compared to the previous ones.
The new cast had to earn their place on Richmond’s women’s team
Just like the previous players in the three seasons, the new cast had to earn their place in the AFC Richmond women’s soccer team.
In a previous report by TheWrap, the British casting director Theo Park revealed that the actors who portrayed professional soccer players had to show their soccer skills during auditions.
Although these actresses did not need to show these skills for their roles in Ted Lasso Season 4, they had to undergo training in a bootcamp during production. Moreover, it was revealed that Marsay, Mack, and Hern played the sport during their schooling years.
In Season 4, Reynolds plays Alice Chilton, Hern plays Gemma, Marsay plays Lizzie, and Mack plays Boots. The new season is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
