Ryan Murphy‘s slasher thriller TV show is available in the Hulu library today. The series brings 80’s glamour with a serial-killer twist. Subscribers can access the psychological thriller series on the streamer from August 5, 2026. It will also be available on FX.
The Shards is highly anticipated as the story comes from the American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis. Moreover, the storyline is semi-autobiographical, based on the author’s own experience during his senior year with added horror elements.
Murphy and Ellis serve as the showrunners and executive producers of the series. Along with Wes Bentley, the ensemble includes Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, Graham Campbell, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jordan Roth.
Other executive producers include Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diederich, Tanase Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.
What is The Shards about?
In The Shards, Rigney stars as a young Easton Ellis as he enters his senior year at the elite Buckley prep school. Living as a senior now, he and his friends find themselves lost in the glamour along with sex, drugs, and personal obsession.
However, things take a dark turn when a serial killer called The Trawler lurks around. As this murderer roams around freely, the lines between who can and cannot be trusted become blurred.
The official synopsis reads, “Set against the vivid backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession, and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence.”
This series was previously being developed by HBO with Kristoffer Borgli directing. Moreover, it was also stated that Jacob Elordi would star in the series. However, due to creative differences, the project stalled, leading to the writer backing out. The project was then picked up by the current showrunner for FX and Hulu.
