According to 2KUTV, Utah police officer Chad Cady used ChatGPT on his body camera during an investigation involving Taylor. The officer turned to the AI tool to get guidance on the case instead of relying solely on standard department resources. He reportedly used the tool to determine whether hiring a private investigator for surveillance was a violation of a protective order.
Greg Rogers, a retired FBI agent and criminal justice professor at Utah Valley University, strongly criticized this AI-assisted approach. He said the tactic “couldn’t be more inappropriate,” and raised questions about how artificial intelligence tools are being used or potentially misused within active law enforcement investigations.
Reports state that Bluffdale’s department policy does technically allow officers to consult ChatGPT. However, police typically have access to far more specialized and secure investigative resources.
On June 5, this year, Mortensen called the cops, suspecting that Taylor had hired a private investigator to follow him. He believed that it was a potential violation of an active protective order barring Paul from directly or indirectly stalking him.
Officers reported that they later spoke with a private investigator named Christopher Gulbraa. Apparently, he seemed shady when questioned and declined to say who had hired him or who he’d been tailing.
The incident marks the latest twist in a legal situation between Paul and Mortensen. They have been involved in at least three separate domestic violence-related police investigations since 2023.
No further action has been announced in connection with the ChatGPT-related investigation yet.
