KJ Apa has opened up about the raw and honest truth about his past struggles with addiction and food. The Riverdale actor is now aware of the addictive nature that led to many of his decisions. He also revealed that he has stayed sober for a year and a half.
During a recent appearance on the Wildmen podcast with Dylan Sprouse and Brendan Columbus, Apa opened up about his life.
KJ Apa recalls struggling with food addiction while filming ‘Riverdale’
During the Wildmen podcast with Dylan Sprouse and Brendan Columbus, KJ said, “I’ve been sober a year and a half. Anything that makes me feel good, yeah, I will abuse. It’s something that I’ve learned about myself.”
He also revealed that he had an unhealthy relationship with food while shooting Riverdale. KJ said, “I used to eat donuts all day long. Go back to my trailer, throw up.” He now understands his addictive behaviour and knows how to manage it, he added.
KJ spoke about spending multiple quarantine periods in Vancouver while working on the series. One quarantine kept him awake for almost 7 days while he was doing things he shouldn’t have been doing, he said.
At another quarantine, he was with two of his co-stars, and he attempted to remain sober without smoking weed. Meanwhile, he was trying to shed pounds before going back to work and was obsessed with getting into shape.
KJ said he ordered several Big Macs, McNuggets, fries, and a milkshake from McDonald’s around 2 a.m. He ate about half of the meal before regret hit, then threw up and urinated on the remaining food so he would not eat it again.
He later returned because he felt hungry and admitted, “I start eating around the piss. I ate the rest of the food.” KJ said that moment revealed the power of addiction over him.
Now the actor knows how to deal with those addictive patterns rather than putting them aside. He explained that he has learned how to talk to that part of himself after identifying it. KJ shared the story to shed light on the truth of addiction, not to hide it.
