A chilling political thriller led by Cillian Murphy will soon be available to stream on Netflix. The film recounts the days leading up to the assassination attempt on a high-ranking Nazi official who was one of the chief architects of the Holocaust.
Anthropoid is coming to Netflix next month
On Thursday, June 4, 2026, Netflix will add Anthropoid to its ever-expanding library (via What’s on Netflix).
Sean Ellis directed the film, co-writing it alongside Anthony Frewin. It stars Cillian Murphy as Jozef Gabčík, Jamie Dornan (known for playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades trilogy) as Jan Kubiš, Charlotte Le Bon as Marie, Anna Geislerová as Lenka, and Detlef Bothe as Reinhard Heydrich, among others.
The film is based on the real-life World War II mission “Operation Anthropoid.” It was carried out by the Czechoslovak resistance soldiers, Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík. Their mission was to assassinate Nazi official SS General Reinhard Heydrich, one of the leaders behind the Holocaust. However, their journey was not easy at all. With the help of a handful of trustworthy allies, Jan and Jozef devised a strategy for killing the Nazi official.
The independent studio Icon Film Distribution released Anthropoid in the Czech Republic, the UK, and Ireland. Meanwhile, Bleecker Street, another independent studio, released it in the United States on September 9, 2016.
Upon release, Anthropoid garnered a mixed-to-positive reception from critics and audiences alike. They praised several aspects of the film, including its intense narrative and the leading actors’ incredible performances.
It currently holds a Tomatometer score of 67% and a Popcornmeter score of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. On IMDb, over 59K users have given it an average score of 7.2. On the other hand, Anthropoid failed to create a buzz at the box office, earning just over $5.2 million globally.
In addition to Anthropoid, Netflix is also adding other hits like The Girl on the Train, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and Another Round to its content library next month.
