Dan Tapster created The Dinosaurs, and Morgan Freeman narrates the series. The show explores dinosaur history from their emergence in the Triassic period to their extinction during the Cretaceous–Paleogene event. Amblin Documentaries and Silverback Films produced the four-part series. It serves as a follow-up to the earlier documentary Life on Our Planet. Each episode runs approximately 44 to 48 minutes.

The documentary series traces the development of dinosaur species across different geological periods. The story begins with early dinosaur ancestors around 235 million years ago. It ends with the asteroid impact that caused a mass extinction 66 million years ago. The narrative includes volcanic eruptions, climate shifts, and the asteroid impact event.

Critical reception has been positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 holds a 100 percent Tomatometer score based on seven critic reviews and a 74 percent audience score from more than 50 ratings. Joel Keller of Decider wrote that “The Dinosaurs has a solid narrative arc, spectacular CGI and the inimitable voice of Morgan Freeman to guide us through the 140 million year rule of the largest animals that ever walked the earth.”
