Rap City Cancelled, Supafest Next?

The Talib Kweli led hip hop event Rap City has been cancelled while Supafest may be close to following the same fate after reports claim the festival is $17 million in debt.

The boutique mini-festival Rap City was called off on Monday due to “unforseen complications with scheduling”, however Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane may still receive visits from Kweli, Homeboy Sandman and Trademark Da Skydiver with solo dates hopefully being announced in the coming weeks.

“The promoters of Rap City regret to announce that Rap City 2013 will not be going ahead over the October Labour Day long weekend, due to unforseen complications with scheduling that were beyond control. However, in the coming weeks Australian solo dates for Talib Kweli, Homeboy Sandman and Trademark Da Skydiver will be announced,” the festival announced on their official Facebook page.

Supafest kicked off string of hip hop festivals to be cancelled in 2013 by dropping out a week out from its start date, postponing until November. Promoter Dwayne Cross says big festival news is right around the corner, but conflicting reports suggest Supafest could be the next Australian festival to get the chop.

An exclusive report from Tone Deaf claims that tickets to April’s event have yet to refunded and the festival owes $17 million to creditors.

Cross’ Paperchase Touring is facing court-appointed liquidation and has been struggling financially since 2011 and may currently owe in excess of 50 different creditors.

Chase Records and Cross issued a statement in retaliation to the reports, published by Tone Deaf.

“We are Pleased to announce that Chase Records is In the final negotiations with a loyalty rewards and payment solutions company, and an Ip tv company that is listed on the Australian stock exchange to assist Chase records with the relaunch of SUPAFEST festival with the new dates to be released in the upcoming weeks this new venture will also establish SUPAFEST.TV  in conjunction with Chase Records which will bring a programming schedule that consists of a blend of the urban scenes a list including music videos, exclusive footage, exclusive events, new artists and a variety of other urban content.

This is supported by a platform that is preloaded in every LG tv in the world so this will reach no less than 40 million household tv’s [sic] around the globe.

Chase Records is extremely excited about this development and will be able to disclose the full details of this transaction in the coming weeks along with the new SUPAFEST dates”
