GDC 2014: PS4 Virtual Reality Headset Announced [UPDATE]

Update: It has been confirmed that the current prototype uses a 1080p display with a 90 degree field of view. Sony also shared that the light bar on top of the DualShock 4 controller can be utilized by developers to further immerse the player in VR games.

Current developers who are working with the Project Morpheus include Epic Games, Crytek, and Silicon Studio.

Original Story: Sony has a virtual reality headset coming to the PS4 and decided to show it off during the Sony Press Conference at GDC 2014. Titled Project Morpheus, a prototype has been developed that looks quite different from the headsets we’ve seen from Sony in the past, but it’s just as sharp looking.

Here’s what it looks like:

The headset will be able to play a variety of PS4 games at launch. Not all games will be supported, though.

Shuhei Yoshida stated the following during the announcement:

We believe Morpheus will further enhance the world of PS4. Morpheus will provide an easy to use plug-and-play experience for consumers.

I anticipate that VR will be the next big thing for gaming, and it appears that the big players of the industry agree. Valve has shown interest as well as Microsoft with its Fortazela. First out the gate will be Oculus Rift which has won accolades during its development and will be debuted later this year.

Sony has set itself up in a big way by giving the PS4 powerful hardware at an affordable price point. Rendering VR requires a lot of processing power, as PC gamers have learned with Oculus Rift Dev Kits. Assuming Project Morpheus is affordable similar to the PS4, it could be exactly what VR needs to grow a sizeable market.

No release window has been announced, but the headset will be available on the GDC show floor tomorrow for attendees to try out.
