Dante Martin Saw Singles Wrestling As ‘Sink Or Swim,’ And Feels Like He’s Doing A Good Job Swimming Now

Dante Martin is keeping his head above water and excelling in the situation he’s currently in.

Dante Martin appeared on AdFreeShows’ One on One with Jon Alba and discussed his recent run as a solo wrestler and work in AEW without his brother, Darius, by his side. The two joined All Elite Wrestling together as Top Flight, but an ACL injury has kept Darius sidelined since February.

Dante told Alba that he hopes to chase the tag titles once his brother is cleared to return, but said he’s handling his current situation quite well and making the most out of a negative situation.

“I think there’s really nowhere to go but up. I’m hoping that as soon as Darius comes back we can get these belts going and start hopefully a legendary career, because that’s what we’re looking to do,” Dante said.

“It’s been pretty hard. Especially just being thrown into the fishes almost, being thrown to the sharks. It’s a sink or swim. I feel like I’m doing a pretty good job swimming right now. Darius has been kind of my coach behind the scenes and been helping me out an amazing amount,” he added. “Although it’s a bad situation, we’re making a good deal out of it.”

Martin said he was definitely uncomfortable stepping into a singles situation at first, noting that he’s been a trained tag team wrestler for his whole career. He said it’s definitely a weird feeling to move to a different division, but he’s enjoyed it so far. When asked about how he handles criticism of some of the high spots he’s known to perform, Dante said that it’s not something he’s too focused on.

“I think to the critics, they’re going to voice their opinion, and as long as overall the people are happy and you’re doing your job to the best you can, that’s all that really matters. People are going to say what they’re going to say at the end of the day, whether your back’s turned or facing them, you just gotta do you.”

Darius Martin had ACL surgery on April 22. During a post-show media scrum after Full Gear, Dante said there’s no current timetable for his brother’s return.
