Keri Russell’s political thriller on Netflix is back with a bang. After leaving fans impressed with an explosive finale in the last season, the acclaimed TV show is now being renewed.
According to an update from Deadline, Netflix has greenlit the fifth season of The Diplomat. Starring Russell and Rufus Sewell, the announcement came just a couple of weeks following the season four finale. The latest season had an overwhelming reception from the crowd. It had 4.8 million opening week views, keeping up with the project’s high ratings back in season three.
Apart from Russell and Sewell, the season 4 cast includes Allison Janney (President Grace Penn), Bradley Whitford (Todd), Ato Essandoh (Stuart Hayford, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy), and Ali Ahn (Eidra Park, CIA London Station Chief). The executive producers for the fourth season are Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, Eli Attie, and Russell.
Keri Russell & Rufus Sewell tease what’s next after The Diplomat season 4 finale
While talking to Deadline, Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell humorously reflected on where their characters might go in the next season of The Diplomat. While the two did not hint at anything about the storyline or the plot for season 5, they jokingly stated that their characters might travel to “somewhere very exotic.” Sewell further added, “Trouble in Fiji,” as Russell chimed in, saying, “A tiki bar”.
The Diplomat Season 4 ended with Kate Wyler dramatically resigning from her position during a G7 meeting in Italy. Commenting on the same, Russell said, “How f–king cool”, and Sewell added, “How fantastic to blow everything up.”
The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn told Deadline, “I legitimately don’t know, and I don’t know if I’ll stick with that. I knew this season where I wanted to land. But if we find something better, I’m going for that, or if we find that these characters have grown into something that isn’t what I anticipated.” While details about season 5 are still under wraps, it is still not officially announced whether the next season will be the series finale.
