Jason Segel has shared a promising update regarding the future of Shrinking. The lead actor believes the comedy drama could continue beyond its upcoming fourth season.
While the series initially had a three-season plan, Segel recently suggested the creative team has found more stories worth exploring, thanks to new storylines that have opened up possibilities for the Apple TV comedy-drama.
In an interview with The Direct while promoting Over Your Dead Body, Segel discussed how long he thinks the show could run. The actor, who also writes and executive produces the series, said its future depends on whether the team can keep developing worthwhile material.
“Well, we keep saying that as long as we can think of stuff to make it worthwhile, we’ll keep going,” Segel said. “And as long as we’re having a good time — and right now we’re having a great time.”
“I think that they’ve really cracked a whole new set of story. I can’t give too much away, but that makes me feel like this could go on for quite a while,” he explained.
The update comes after Season 3 wrapped up several major character arcs. Jimmy began moving forward with his life, Paul retired and moved to Connecticut, and the rest of the central characters also reached important milestones.
How Shrinking could continue beyond Season 4
Co-created by Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein, and Segel, Shrinking was originally conceptualized as a three-part thematic trilogy: Season 1 focused on grief, Season 2 examined forgiveness, and Season 3 centered on moving forward. The Season 3 finale provided satisfying resolutions for its characters without leaving major cliffhangers.
However, Lawrence has indicated that Season 4 will introduce a different chapter rather than simply revisit those storylines. The upcoming season is expected to feature a two-year time jump, allowing the characters to enter new stages of their lives.
Apple TV+ officially renewed Shrinking for Season 4 prior to the premiere of Season 3 in January 2026. While the streaming service has not yet formally ordered Season 5, Segel’s comments suggest the creative foundation is firmly in place for a long-term run.
