Paramount Explores Selling & More Exit Options for Struggling Streaming Service

Paramount and Comcast are reviewing the future of their European streaming service. The companies are considering a potential sale or wind-down as they reassess the business amid growing challenges across the media industry.

SkyShowtime, launched in 2022, now operates in more than 20 European countries. The company has several million subscribers, but its board has started a strategic review that could determine whether the service continues in its current form.

Why is SkyShowtime’s future being questioned now?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the SkyShowtime board informed CEO Monty Sarhan about the review in a letter on Monday. The board said a wind-down is one option, but stressed that it has not made a final decision.

The board wrote, “No decisions have been made, and all options remain under consideration.” It also described SkyShowtime as operating in “one of the most competitive markets in our industry.” The board added that the landscape “continues to evolve rapidly and remains highly challenging.”

Paramount and Comcast launched SkyShowtime as a joint venture. The platform combines content from Paramount, NBCUniversal, and Sky Studios, giving audiences access to programming from several major entertainment brands.

The companies have invested heavily in the venture. According to Deadline, Paramount and Comcast invested more than $1 billion in SkyShowtime in 2025 to expand its reach and strengthen its position in the European market. The current review comes despite that investment and the platform’s growing subscriber base.

Sarhan wrote that SkyShowtime has “several million subscribers” and now “stand in scale alongside the most established players in the market.” However, the growth metrics were not enough, and its owners are now reassessing the business.

The review also comes as Paramount undergoes major changes following David Ellison’s acquisition of the company. At the same time, Hollywood media companies are taking a closer look at their streaming services and deciding where to keep investing.

For now, SkyShowtime remains fully operational. The board told employees that the review is “the beginning of a dialogue, not the end of one,” and it confirmed that employees’ roles remain unchanged. Final decisions will be made after the required employee information and consultation processes in each market are completed.
