Dan Schneider Suffers Major Defeat in Quiet on Set Lawsuit Appeal

Former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider has suffered a major legal setback after a California appellate court dismissed his defamation lawsuit against the creators of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.

Schneider filed the lawsuit in May 2024, alleging that the hit docuseries falsely implied he was a child sex abuser. However, an appellate court panel has now ruled in favor of the show’s creators and distributors.

According to Variety, the producers of Quiet on Set have won a lawsuit brought by Schneider. The defendants, Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony, and producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz, filed an appeal against Schneider’s allegations, and a three-judge panel ruled in their favor.

Judge Melanie Ochoa wrote for the panel, “The documentary clearly distinguishes between the lamentable conduct that its participants attribute to Schneider, gender discrimination, harassment, toxic workplace behavior, and inappropriate sexual innuendo, and the child sexual abuse explicitly attributed to three named individuals, two of whom are discussed at length.”

The judge also wrote that Schneider’s conduct in the show leaned towards confirmed “inappropriate behavior.” However, it does not have any evidence of child sexual abuse accusations. “Schneider’s attempt to find an alternative meaning than what is expressly stated in the documentary is unavailing,” Ochoa added.

The allegations at the center of Dan Schneider’s Quiet on Set lawsuit

Quiet on Set aired on Investigation Discovery in March 2024. The docuseries exposed the toxic, abusive, and unsafe environment behind popular 1990s and 2000s children’s television programs.

After the documentary aired, Schneider released a video apology. However, the producer also filed a lawsuit against the show’s creators. His attorneys claimed that while the show did not explicitly accuse Schneider of sex abuse, it juxtaposed accusations of “inappropriate behavior” with images of Schneider’s arm around child actresses.

Moreover, the former Nickelodeon showrunner claimed that he had nothing to do with the other cases that the show delved into.

These cases involved the dialogue coach Brian Peck, who was arrested for child sex abuse, and production assistant Jason Michael Handy, who was accused of sending an explicit photo to a child actress. According to Schneider, the show misrepresented him by linking him to Peck and Handy.
