Dan Schneider Loses Big as ‘Quiet on Set’ Producers Win Appeal

Trigger Warning: This article includes discussion of alleged sexual assault, with details.

Former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider’s defamation case against Warner Bros. Discovery over Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV has been rejected. Schneider filed his lawsuit in May 2024, shortly after Quiet on Set premiered on Investigation Discovery in March. He denied having anything to do with the cases discussed in the series and argued that the docuseries falsely connected him to the allegations.

Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony and the documentary’s producers prevailed in Schneider’s defamation case

Schneider became known for creating several hit Nickelodeon shows, including The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly, and Victorious. However, the network cut ties with him in 2018 amid allegations of abusive conduct. Quiet on Set detailed allegations of abuse and inappropriate behavior linked to Nickelodeon productions, including iCarly and Drake & Josh. Schneider said the documentary falsely portrayed him as someone who had sexually abused the children who worked on his television shows.

In a November 22, 2024, ruling, Judge Ashfaq G. Chowdhury refused to dismiss the lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and Maxine Productions. However, WBD, Sony, and producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz appealed the decision. Now, a three-judge panel has unanimously ruled in their favor.

Judge Melanie Ochoa said, as stated by Variety, “The documentary clearly distinguishes between the lamentable conduct that its participants attribute to Schneider — gender discrimination, harassment, toxic workplace behavior, and inappropriate sexual innuendo — and the child sexual abuse explicitly attributed to three named individuals, two of whom are discussed at length. Quiet on Set also affirmatively states that Schneider’s employer investigated his conduct and, while it confirmed some inappropriate behavior, it found no evidence of child sexual abuse. Schneider’s attempt to find an alternative meaning to what is expressly stated in the documentary is unavailing.”

Schneider’s attorney, Gerry Silver, expressed disappointment over the court’s decision to reverse the Superior Court’s ruling. He said the legal team is considering whether to seek further review or appeal the decision. Silver noted that the court found no evidence that Schneider had been sexually abusive toward any of his cast members. He added that the court agreed such an allegation would be provably false.
