Jason Sudeikis wasn’t keen on making Ted Lasso Season 4 after five years on the show. He later revealed that the show and his character had saved him. Now, the new season will be out this year.

Why didn’t Jason Sudeikis want to make Ted Lasso Season 4?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Sudeikis was the only one on the holdout for Ted Lasso Season 4. The article further explains that the lead star had invested five years writing and rewriting the Apple TV show script, in addition to starring in it. This creative and personal investment had exhausted him.

Moreover, when the show first aired in 2020, Sudeikis was also going through a public split from Olivia Wilde. According to the report, none of the cast members or co-creators were ready to “press him” for more content for the show’s fourth season. Initially, he had planned for only three Seasons on the show. He felt that the show was completed after the finale of the last season.

In an interview, he stated, “That wasn’t a negotiation tactic. The story was told. Ted went home to be with his son. I wasn’t going to have Ted uproot their life to justify the money truck. It made no sense to me.”

Over time, Sudeikis realized that the show was much bigger than him, and the character Ted Lasso was a saving grace for many. He stated that when fans approached him stating that the show “saved them,” he would reply, “It saved me too.”

He added, “It is infectious to play a character who sees the best in people and isn’t mad at the world for all its foibles and bullies and shadows. It’s not like I’m Daniel Day-Lewis, but it was good to live in that — to have that coursing through your brain and your body all day. It still is.”

Season 3 production dragged on for several months with him pulling all-nighters to finalize scripts. By the end of the season, he was done with the show and wanted to work on something else. However, his co-actor Brett Goldstein “believed that there was more” to the world and characters that had been built.

Eventually, the creator joined in for Season 4 production with a new narrative to avoid further burnout. In the upcoming season, his character will be seen coaching a newly established AFC Richmond women’s football team.

He concluded the interview by adding, “I know I needed this. I needed it as much as other people do.” Ted Lasso Season 3 will premiere on Apple TV on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. A Season 5 update was also released ahead of the Season 4 premiere.
