The Rookie Season 8 has been a massive success for ABC. This month’s finale of the popular drama turned in a record viewership, even surpassing the previous season’s milestone.
The Rookie Season 8 finale posts high viewership numbers
The Rookie Season 8 finale, which aired on May 6, 2026, drew 9.25 million total viewers, according to Deadline. That marks a 4% increase from the Season 7 finale that pulled in 8.93 million total viewers after premiering last year on May 13, 2025.
Moreover, the finale drew the largest audience for Season 8 in over three months, since January 26, 2026. It also set a streaming high over seven days and achieved a season-best 2.1 rating in the 18-49 age group.
The show, featuring Nathan Fillion, has also become popular, especially with young viewers, after going viral on platforms like TikTok. According to Nielsen, it’s the best broadcast drama in the 18-34 age group category and the No.1 series overall among teens aged 12-17.
Interestingly, the recently concluded season marks the fourth straight year that The Rookie has seen an increase in total viewers, and it also ranked at the top among the 18-49 age group compared to the 2021-22 season.

With The Rookie Season 8 doing wonders for ABC, the network has already announced a spin-off series based on the iconic cop drama. The Rookie: North, an upcoming show featuring Jay Ellis in the lead role, is set to premiere during the midseason window.
The spin-off will also star Chris Sullivan, Karen Fukuhara, Froy Gutierrez, Janet Montgomery, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson. Alexi Hawley will serve as executive producer alongside Ellis as a producer. Moreover, Fillion, Mark Gordon, Bill Norcross, and Michelle Chapman will serve as executive producers.
The Rookie Season 8 is currently streaming with all episodes on Hulu. Meanwhile, Season 9 is yet to receive an official release date window, but is expected to arrive at some point in 2027.
