Matthew McConaughey’s long-gestating Yellowstone spin-off might not be dead. The actor was previously linked to a modern-day Yellowstone follow-up series but talks have seemingly fizzled out.
A new update from Dutton Ranch star Cole Hauser has reopened the possibility of McConaughey’s Yellowstone spin-off being made.

According to reports, McConaughey’s Yellowstone spin-off was set to include Cole Hauser, tentatively titled 2024. While that series never materialized, Hauser went on to star in Dutton Ranch, a sequel to Yellowstone. Fans have since speculated whether 2024 morphed into Dutton Ranch during development.
Speaking with The Playlist, Hauser set the record straight on whether Dutton Ranch and the McConaughey-led spin-off were the same thing.
“No. Dutton was a one-off to its own,” Hauser said. “I know what you’re talking about. I’m friends with Matthew, so we had a little dialogue along the way years ago, but it had nothing to do with that. It was just how do we take these two creative beings and Kelly, me, and give us the kind of, I guess, roadmap to continue to create these characters and do something special that’s new and challenging and that’s entertaining ultimately for the audience.”
Hauser’s comments suggest Matthew McConaughey’s series was always a separate project, keeping the door open for it. That said, Hauser is currently attached to another project with McConaughey titled Arena. Created by True Detective creator Nick Pizzolatto, the upcoming series will see Hauser and McConaughey play “two brothers who coach in college sports, in Division One.”
Fans wanting to see Matthew McConaughey lead a Western can look forward to The Rivals of Amziah King. Meanwhile, Dutton Ranch has entered the upper echelon of the Yellowstone franchise, with an impressive 85% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
