Kevin Hart may have taken the hot seat for the Netflix roast show this year, but the opportunity was initially offered to a legendary musician and one of the greatest living songwriters. However, the beloved artist chose to skip this chance.
What legendary musician turned down a Netflix Roast?
Before Hart, the spot for the Netflix roast show was offered to none other than former Beatle and songwriter Paul McCartney. However, he ultimately turned down this opportunity, reports Variety.
The roast show’s executive producer and comedian, Jeff Ross, revealed, “We did ask Paul McCartney at one point. To me, that would be a fantasy roast. Paul McCartney doesn’t need anything, but a Paul McCartney roast would be good for the world. It would be so funny to me because he is so loved.”
The producers wanted to escalate after Tom Brady’s roast in 2024 and to have McCartney join the show for the next edition. Interestingly, he wasn’t the only big name considered for the Netflix roast show, as it appears the company had “thrown around a lot of names”, according to stand-up comedy chief Robbie Praw. At one point, even Will Smith’s name popped up.
Netflix’s first roast show edition, featuring NFL champion Brady, was hosted by Kevin Hart in 2024 and was even nominated for an Emmy for a live variety special. The second iteration, featuring Hart on the hot seat, streamed live Sunday on Netflix and was hosted by Shane Gillis at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Other key guests included Chelsea Handler, Pete Davidson, Regina Hall, Dwayne Johnson, and Katt Williams.
For the next iteration, Ross teased, saying, “A pop star or a rock star would be great. A rapper would be great,” while suggesting potential names like Drake and Stevie Wonder.
The Kevin Hart roast show is available to stream on Netflix.
