Jon Stewart warned against complacency about a potential post-election standoff on the latest episode of his Weekly Show podcast. The host said Donald Trump could attempt another “January 6” if Democrats “win big” in the midterms. He suggested Trump and Republicans in power may “just not seat the representatives and senators.”

Stewart acknowledged the scenario sounds extreme but cautioned against dismissing it. He recalled his own disbelief during the Capitol breach, saying he watched it “in utter disbelief.” He conceded that ruling out such an outcome “may be a failure of my imagination, as January 6th was too.”

The host described himself as fundamentally hopeful but wary of political systems. He noted, “I am optimistic at my core about people, but people exist in systems that are designed by, I guess we’ll call them, a–holes.” Stewart also admitted he is “not a man known for my lighthearted vision of the future.”

Political analysts, including those on Fox News, have forecast significant losses for Republicans in next week’s midterms. Trump has responded with multiple strategies to boost turnout, including urging voters to treat the election as a referendum on him. He also offered a $1 million bounty for voter fraud tips just a week before Election Day.

Stewart urged listeners to vote, framing the midterms as a chance to impose “checks and balances” on the current administration. He predicted that if Trump refuses to honor election outcomes, “people will go to the streets.” He clarified he meant peaceful protest against “an authoritative power grab,” not violence. Stewart called the midterms a “fulcrum point” where society decides whether to continue accepting the status quo.
