Russia has reportedly attacked some big cities in Ukraine as Donald Trump’s wife Melania‘s brokered ceasefire between the two countries took effect. The White House revealed on October 23 that the First Lady helped Russia and Ukraine reach a ceasefire. It took place in the city of Oleshky, allowing humanitarian aid to reach the residents.
What Ukraine reported as the localized humanitarian truce took effect
According to a report by CNBC, Russia continued hitting cities in Ukraine with big missiles despite the ceasefire brokered between the countries by Melania Trump taking effect. The ceasefire took effect in Oleshky, near the Crimean Peninsula, at 3:00 AM local time to allow people in the city to receive humanitarian aid due to shortages of water, food, and medicine.
In a tweet on X, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Russia’s attack. He wrote, “While emergency services were helping people and dealing with the aftermath of the first strike, the Russians used ballistic missiles again. In total, 16 ballistic missiles were launched overnight. More than 280 drones as well. Tragically, there have been casualties and hits in Kyiv, including on the South Bridge.”
He also said Russian strikes hit other cities, including Dnipro, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Donetsk, Kherson, and other regions. Moreover, Zelenskyy confirmed that a university was hit. He added that the death toll has risen to 12, including students and university staff.
In his tweet, the Ukrainian President also thanked everyone sending support packages and called for peace.
In her statement following the ceasefire brokered between Russia and Ukraine, Melania expressed concern about conditions in Oleshky. She said the town, mostly made up of elderly residents, had limited water, electricity, and other facilities. Thus, she felt that without her intervention, “the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible.”
