According to the latest report, the Met police confirmed that they ignored a 2019 letter about Meghan Markle’s dad’s offenses. Meghan recently released a statement about shocking allegations against her dad, Thomas Markle Sr. It was said that the Duchess of Sussex was allegedly aware of the letter, but UK police advised her not to discuss it publicly at the time. Now, authorities would seemingly investigate and review how things were handled when the letter was originally sent years ago.
UK police investigating how 2019 letter about Thomas Markle Sr. was handled
After Meghan Markle’s public statement, the Met Police admitted they received a 2019 letter against Thomas Markle Sr. According to The Telegraph, Scotland Yard confirmed receiving the letter. It reportedly contained “a number of claims about alleged offending.” Furthermore, they admitted that the letter was not passed to overseas authorities for further investigation.
Meanwhile, UK police are reportedly reviewing why the situation was not handled properly in 2019. The report claimed the letter was sent to the Met’s Fixated Threat Assessment Centre by someone close to Markle’s family.
Dai Davies, the former head of Scotland Yard’s Royal Protection Command, told the outlet that he was “astounded” by the information. He allegedly couldn’t believe why the “material” was not passed to other authorities. He questioned the Met Police’s role, which was to protect the Royal Family’s reputation.
At the time, Meghan and Prince Harry were working royals. So Davies believed the police reportedly avoided their “duty of care” to the Duchess and the victims. “They would have been duty-bound, especially given Harry and Meghan’s level of fame just after their marriage, to carry out their own initial assessment and, if necessary, take it forward.”
For those unversed, Thomas Sr. has been accused of possessing child sexual abuse material. While Markle expressed how “distressed” she felt in a statement, her father denied the allegations. “I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of,” he told the Daily Mail.
