Katie Zacharia’s historic firing as White House press secretary broke a record no one wanted. The ousted spokeswoman’s troubled five-day tenure unraveled amid questions about her credentials and a rocky briefing-room debut.
Katie Zacharia’s departure follows questions about her legal credentials
Katie Zacharia is out as White House press secretary after just five days, CBS News reported on Friday. Two U.S. officials confirmed her removal from the role. The departure capped a turbulent week marked by scrutiny of her qualifications and a widely criticized briefing-room debut.
Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine Law School but did not pass the California bar exam in 2011. She had represented herself as a lawyer over the years despite never gaining bar admission. She told conservative commentator Jack Posobiec that she was careful in how she presented her credentials. “I never came across as someone who was an attorney at law,” Zacharia said.
Zacharia held her sole press briefing on Tuesday, drawing sharp criticism. She spoke from prepared remarks for roughly 10 minutes before taking questions from only three outlets. She later defended the performance on Fox News, citing limited preparation time. “I received briefing materials in the morning of Tuesday,” she told host Sean Hannity. Hannity, a Trump ally, acknowledged her debut was “widely panned.”
One White House aide said Zacharia spent the week isolated from key operations. “No one thought she was sticking around long enough to even involve her in actual decision-making,” the aide told CBS News. President Trump himself suggested she reconsider staying. “They’ve been so nasty to her,” Trump said of the press before departing the White House on Friday.
Zacharia’s five-day stint drew comparisons to Anthony Scaramucci’s 11-day run as communications director during Trump’s first term. “Records are made to be broken. But I take no pleasure in other people’s pain,” Scaramucci posted on X. Sources familiar with the discussions said Zacharia will transition into a different administration role.
