Mitch McConnell Return Update Raises Questions After GOP Ally Admits No Direct Contact

Republican James Comer was recently asked for an update regarding Senator Mitch McConnell‘s long-awaited return. McConnell has been out of office since mid-June, when he was hospitalized after suffering a fall and facing issues with mild pneumonia. Although he was discharged in August, reports say he is currently recovering at home.

Rep. James Comer says he is not in contact with Mitch McConnell

CNN recently asked Kentucky Representative James Comer when Senator Mitch McConnell is expected to return to duty after his nearly three-month absence.

However, Comer said he has not yet spoken with the Senator directly. This further increases doubts about a clear return date for McConnell. He suggested that he was mostly in contact with McConnell’s staff and stated, “I have not talked to Leader McConnell. I’ve talked to his staff, many of whom are from my district originally. And they have all said it’s their goal for Senator McConnell to be here when the Senate comes in.” The Senate returns after a five-week recess break on September 14.

After suffering a fall in mid-June, McConnell was hospitalized for almost two months. However, without a direct statement from the Senator after his hospitalization, speculation about his health grew. In July, he released a “proof of life” photo with his wife, Elaine Chao, and shared a statement saying he is trying to recover quickly.

He added, “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.” (via Time Magazine)

Beyond this update, McConnell has not given a specific date for his return to the Senate. Last week, Fox News host Joe Concha demanded on his show that McConnell “needs to step down” if he doesn’t return in September.
