A letter issued by the Lord Chamberlain on behalf of King Charles has reaffirmed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s status as non-working royals and private citizens. The clarification came shortly after the Sussexes returned to the UK with their two children after six years in the United States. According to a source cited by Us Weekly, the message was intended to prevent confusion over whether Harry and Meghan could maintain a “one foot in, one foot out” position within the Royal Family.
King Charles wanted Meghan and Harry to know they ‘can’t be one foot in and one foot out, per a source
King Charles reportedly wished for his youngest son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, to realize that they “can’t be one foot in and one foot out,” after they moved back to Britain after six years of living in the US. Back in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their official duties as working royals and left the UK to settle down in their Montecito mansion in California. Thus, their recent UK move has been raising eyebrows.
As reported by US Magazine, a source explained what happened when the Sussexes gave up their working royal status. It was reportedly according to an agreement. Per the source, everything “public-facing” the Sussexes wanted to do with certain patronages, the palace had to approve first. The agreement was made so that Harry and Markle “would not be confused as official working royals.” The source then added that “With them moving back to the U.K., it’s been confusing.”
Meanwhile, the insider claimed that with the letter, the king intended to clarify the Sussex couple’s status to the public. The monarch allegedly wanted to let the public know that the Sussexes will not be using their “HRH” titles, even after their return to the UK. Furthermore, the source explained that the king also wanted to clarify that Harry and Markle remained private citizens. “The king just wanted the public and press not to be confused. They can’t be one foot in and one foot out,” the insider added.
