A leaked script review for Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot draws comparisons to four wildly different films. The surprising mashup description hints at the tone and style audiences can expect from the MCU’s mutant debut.
MCU’s X-Men reboot rumored to be like Thunderbolts* mixed with BVS
Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot has reportedly received strong early praise for its script. Scooper MyTimeToShineHello shared on X that a source recently read the screenplay. The source described it as: “If Thunderbolts*, X-Men: First Class, Batman v Superman, and The Breakfast Club had a baby, it would be this.”
The comparison suggests the film blends several distinct tones and styles together. For instance, Thunderbolts* focused on morally gray characters forced into reluctant teamwork within the MCU. Meanwhile, X-Men: First Class explored the origins of young mutants during a politically charged era. On the other hand, Batman v Superman brought a darker, more divisive blockbuster sensibility to its superhero conflict. Finally, The Breakfast Club centered on interpersonal drama among teenagers from different social backgrounds.
Additionally, Jake Schreier directs the X-Men reboot after helming Thunderbolts* for Marvel Studios. Furthermore, Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are rewriting a script originally drafted by Michael Lesslie. Schreier also confirmed in August 2025 that the film had entered pre-production.
Marvel Studios officially unveiled the cast at D23 2026 on August 14. Specifically, Christopher Abbott will portray Charles Xavier/Professor X in the film. Moreover, Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, reprising her role from Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Similarly, Kit Connor takes on the role of Scott Summers/Cyclops. In addition, Samara Weaving joins as Emma Frost. Inde Navarrette will portray Anna Marie/Rogue, while Maya Boyd plays Ororo Munroe/Storm. Notably, Adam Driver rounds out the announced cast as Nathaniel Milbury/Mister Sinister.
Previously, Kevin Feige teased the film would feature familiar and new characters together. He also expressed excitement about bringing the X-Men’s signature “soap opera” elements into the MCU. Ultimately, the X-Men reboot currently holds a May 5, 2028 release date.
