Avengers: Secret Wars Rumor Could Bring Back a Familiar Infinity War Rule

A new Avengers: Secret Wars rumor is giving fans major Infinity War deja-vu. The latest update may offer a hint about which superheroes could appear in 2027’s Avengers film.

Recent rumors have been circulating about Bucky Barnes’ potential death in the upcoming December release. Taking to X, a user asked scooper James Mack whether Bucky will truly die or if he will come back in Secret Wars. After all, we all know Marvel always keeps doors open for characters to return.

Replying to the query, Mack suggested a pattern that both films can follow. The post read, “Characters who die a natural death (a true death) will not be resurrected on Battleworld. Only those who die because of the collision of the incursions will be resurrected.”

He further added, “For example, if Shuri dies because Doom rips her head off, she won’t be resurrected. But if she dies because of the universe being destroyed in the final incursion, she will be resurrected. You understand?”

At this point, the speculation is just a rumor, and fans must take it with a grain of salt. Marvel has not yet confirmed anything about the plot. Interestingly, Mack’s claim echoes a distinction Marvel used in the transition from Avengers: Infinity War to Avengers: Endgame

The Infinity War rule that could shape Avengers: Secret Wars

Avengers: Secret Wars might follow the MCU rule that fans have already witnessed before. The MCU has previously distinguished between characters who were erased by the Snap and those who were killed outright.

During the period between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, fans speculated about which characters would return. Fans generally assumed that characters who were killed before Thanos’ Snap were genuinely dead. However, those erased by the Snap could potentially be restored. While this distinction largely held true in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel later found ways to reintroduce characters who had previously died.

Although the original Gamora died in Infinity War, a 2014 version of the character traveled to the present in Endgame. Loki from the main MCU timeline was killed by Thanos. The Loki seen in the Disney+ series is a 2012 variant who escaped from the main timeline during Endgame. Vision was killed by Thanos in Infinity War, while Wanda later created a Hex version of him in WandaVision. The original Vision’s body was subsequently reactivated as White Vision.

Following that idea, a character killed by Doctor Doom before the end of Doomsday could remain dead, while a variant or alternate version could potentially appear in Secret War.
