Doctor Doom could claim a major victim in Avengers: Doomsday. A new Marvel rumor says Bucky Barnes may not survive the upcoming crossover, raising questions about the Winter Soldier’s fate in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel scooper @MyTimeToShineH shared on X, “Bucky dies by Doom’s hand.” The post claims that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will kill Sebastian Stan’s character in the film. However, Marvel Studios has not confirmed this reported plot detail, so Bucky’s fate remains uncertain.
Bucky Barnes’ rumored fate in Avengers: Doomsday adds to MCU speculation
Bucky Barnes has been part of the MCU since Captain America: The First Avenger. Introduced as Steve Rogers’ close friend, Bucky later became the Winter Soldier, a brainwashed assassin controlled by Hydra. Over the years, he has worked to overcome his past and establish himself as a hero in his own right.
The rumor raises questions about how Marvel might conclude his story. Bucky is among the returning characters in Avengers: Doomsday, and the official cast list confirms Stan’s involvement. However, the announcement provides no information about Bucky’s role or whether he survives his encounter with Doom.
The report also comes as Marvel Comics explores a surprising development for Bucky. In Avengers: Armageddon #5, his body begins regenerating two weeks after an incident that appeared to kill him. Nick Fury Sr. later finds him alive, raising the possibility of a new role for Barnes in the comics. However, the comic-book storyline offers no confirmation of Bucky’s fate in the MCU.
Robert Downey Jr., who previously played Tony Stark, returns to Marvel as Victor von Doom. Avengers: Doomsday will bring together heroes from different universes to face a major threat, and the film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
As Marvel has not confirmed the rumor, Bucky’s fate in Avengers: Doomsday remains unknown.
