James Bond might be one of the most coveted movie roles in film, but The Gentlemen star Theo James has said he will not be pursuing it. The actor recently shared two particular reasons why he’s ruled himself out of the search for the new 007.
Theo James had two reasons for not pursuing James Bond role
In a recent interview with British GQ, Theo James revealed that he doesn’t think he can play Bond primarily because of his age.
When asked to address the 007 casting rumors involving him, the English actor simply replied, “I’m definitely too old now, for one.” However, at age 41, James is far from the oldest candidate to be put forward for the part of the charismatic spy.
While Pierce Brosnan made the role his own in GoldenEye at the same age as Theo James, Roger Moore did the same in 1973, aged 45, making him the oldest James Bond to date due to his lengthy run as the character. Moreover, Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig were not far from the 40-year mark when they first played Bond, debuting at ages 40 and 38, respectively.
During the discussion, James provided another explanation behind his decision to not pursue the role. Without specifically mentioning James Bond, the actor noted his preference for choosing smaller roles to maintain anonymity. “Imagine, suddenly, you and I cannot walk down the street. What that does to your children, who are trying to find themselves in the midst of hyper-scrutiny and fame. None of that, to me, is worth it,” he remarked. “At the time, it’s very intoxicating, being offered some huge, sexy part that would change your life forever. But it really wouldn’t ultimately be worth it.”
Connecting the Bond role to this ideology, Theo James added, “That would be an example of a place you could never come back from.”
At the time of writing, Amazon MGM has yet to announce the actor who’ll be the new James Bond in the next 007 feature.
