Glen Powell is now rumored to have signed on to the role of an iconic Disney character in an upcoming live-action film. According to several reports, Powell will replace Fast & Furious star Luke Evans as Gaston in Disney’s upcoming Beauty and the Beast prequel. The film was originally reported to be in development late last year.
The first rumors of the news came from scooper MyTimeToShineHello, who, in a paywalled post, claimed that Powell was circling the project. This was later corroborated by a report from The Insneider’s Jeff Sneider. “I don’t even think that people at Disney are excited about this project; it’s just something they feel like they have to make to extend the Beauty and the Beast IP,” wrote Sneider in the report.
At the time of writing, Disney has not officially commented on the matter, so this report should be treated as a rumor.
What else do we know about the Beauty and the Beast prequel movie with Glen Powell?
Following the release of the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast in 2017, Disney started developing other projects based on the IP. The first project was a TV series prequel centered on Gaston and LeFou for Disney+, which was later canceled. Following that, the Beauty and the Beast prequel film was announced to be in development (via Deadline), with Dave Callaham writing the script and Michelle Rejwan producing.
The previous report suggested that the film will have a “swashbuckling” tone. Callaham previously wrote on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Godzilla x Kong, and other films. Powell previously starred in Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, The Running Man, and other films. The actor will next be seen in Chad Powers season 2.
The Beauty and the Beast film has not been officially given a release date. However, given the timing of the rumor, fans are expecting the casting announcement to happen at D23 Expo this weekend.
