In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Abrams broke the silence on how her earlier comments about her relationship with Mescal and her career were interpreted in the wrong way. She said, “I’m like, ‘Are we on crack? Like, what the f—? That was my cue to be like, ‘Oh, remember why you don’t look [at social media]?” she said, referring to fan reactions over her earlier remark.
She said she has “far less experience” writing music while being in a relationship filled with love and security. “And I was like, ‘Oh, s—, how am I going to approach this?’ Or, you know, ‘How’s it going to impact the quantity of songs I write?’ And it’s had the most amazing effect on my writing. It has given me the most amount of space to reflect on everything in my life,” she explained.
However, she believes her relationship with Mescal has also held up a “mirror” to her like no other bond ever has. She appreciates how it has given her a broader perspective on her relationships and friendships. “The greatest gift, period,” she said, referring to her bond with Mescal.
The rumors about Abrams’ relationship with Mescal affecting her career began right after her Vogue interview. In it, she said, “I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music. It freaked me out.” Mescal and Abrams dating speculation began in 2024, when they were spotted together on a date at a restaurant in London. Earlier this year, they also made their red carpet debut at the BAFTA Film Awards.
