Oprah Winfrey has opened up about her headline-making 2021 interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, highlighting one detail that she said left her puzzled, RadarOnline reported.
Vanity Fair featured the beloved talk show host in a segment looking back at her most memorable on-air moments. One highlight included the famous 2004 “you get a car!” giveaway from her former daytime program.
The 72-year-old lit up with, “I love this, love this, love this,” as she watched audience members lose it over getting free cars. But Winfrey’s energy shifted when she was shown a heavily talked-about moment from her conversation with Meghan Markle. In that clip, she had asked the Duchess of Sussex if Buckingham Palace had “silenced” her.
The “Suits” star began with, “I’ve always valued independence. I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights. I mean, that’s the sad irony of the past four years, because I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice, and then…I was silent.”
The television producer held her left thumb and forefinger together and gestured as if zipping her mouth shut. She then turned to Markle and asked, “Were you silent, or silenced?” The Duchess nodded in response and said, “The latter.”
Speaking about the moment that sparked so much discussion, Oprah Winfrey stood by asking the question. “I wanted to be clear, because was she silenced? Were people telling her not to talk? That’s why I said that,” she explained.
“I said it for clarification, because I didn’t want later to hear ‘Well no, it wasn’t that. (It) really was that I was silenced. They wouldn’t let me talk.’ So, it was all for clarification.”
