Critics accused Oprah of distancing herself from Meghan Markle’s bombshell royal interview

According to the Daily Mail, Oprah Winfrey faced public ire after revisiting her 2021 interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Critics have accused her of “backpedaling” from the conversation.

In Vanity Fair’s Scene Selection, Oprah recalled some milestone moments from her career. Looking back on the bombshell interview, Oprah attempted to explain her “Were you silent or were you silenced?” question to Meghan Markle.

“I wanted to be clear,” Oprah said. “I said it for clarification because I didn’t want, later, to hear, ‘Well no, it wasn’t that. It really was that I was silenced.’ So it was all for clarification.”

Her explanation drew criticism on X. One critic said, “She sounds so defensive, like she’s gotten a lot of flak for her “journalism” in that so-called interview.” Another person quipped, “It is a bad look when Oprah has to clear this up now after so many years.”

A third user questioned why Oprah had not asked for “clarification” about “getting married before the wedding” as claimed by Markle. Someone also said that “Oprah backpedaling?”

The interview came after the Sussexes had famously exited the royal fold and moved to Montecito, California. It featured Meghan claiming that the royal family had “perpetuated falsehoods” about the couple. Additionally, she claimed that she had been “silenced” while carrying out royal duties. The Duchess also claimed there had been concerns about Prince Archie’s skin colour.

The interview also cemented Oprah’s position as a strong ally of the Sussexes in their rift with the Firm. Five years later, Oprah is still being questioned about the interview, which ran for three and a half hours.
