Yet, despite that history, insiders now claim their relationship never extended beyond the studio.
Swift first appeared on the talk show in 2008 while promoting her “Fearless” album. From there, she returned several times for interviews, performances, and comedy sketches. As a result, many viewers assumed the two had developed a genuine friendship. However, a source who reportedly worked on the show claimed that was never the case.
“She was regular and favorite guest, but it was always just a talkshow relationship,” the insider told Page Six. The source added that while the pair shared “lots of fun stuff together,” there “was never a friendship beyond a professional one.”
That claim, according to the outlet’s report, explains why DeGeneres was allegedly left off the guest list for Swift’s wedding. While the omission caught fans off guard, the insider suggested it was not unexpected behind the scenes.
There were several memorable interactions between the two. In 2013, for example, DeGeneres jokingly teased Swift about her dating life during an interview. The exchange later became one of the show’s most talked-about clips after Swift appeared noticeably emotional. Meanwhile, her final appearance came in 2021 through a pre-recorded segment rather than an in-studio interview, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the other hand, DeGeneres remained publicly supportive of the pop star throughout the years. Page Six noted the show’s team even released a compilation featuring all of Swift’s appearances. Even so, insiders believe that admiration did not translate into a personal relationship.
