The folk icon tells a concert crowd why he skipped the Madison Square Garden nuptials
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce married on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The star-studded celebration was attended by hundreds of family members, friends, athletes, and celebrities. James Taylor and his wife, Kim Taylor, also received an invitation but chose not to attend.
James shared the news with the audience during his concert at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts. He told concertgoers that he and his wife skipped Swift and Kelce’s wedding because his annual Fourth of July performance was a tradition he did not want to miss. He also wished the newlyweds well as they began their new chapter together.
James Taylor has performed at Tanglewood on the Fourth of July for more than five decades. He began the tradition in 1974 and has continued it every year since. James and Swift also share a meaningful connection, as Swift’s parents named her after the legendary singer. He previously recalled that Swift told him the story during a charity event.
During a 2011 concert at Madison Square Garden, Swift told fans that her mother explained the story behind her name after she sang “Fire and Rain” in chorus class. She later welcomed James to the stage for a surprise duet of the classic song. Although James was unable to attend the wedding celebration, he wished the couple well as they began a new chapter together. His longtime Fourth of July tradition remained his priority that weekend.
