A recent post by Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton might have ruled out a major rumor. It involves MJ’s apparent new boyfriend, played by Eman Esfandi in the movie. Much about the character remains strictly under wraps. However, some rumors suggest that he is one of the villains appearing in the movie.
Eman Esfandi’s unnamed Brand New Day role still leaves room for Tarantula theories
In a recent Instagram post, Cretton celebrated the lesser-known but equally important members of the Spider-Man 4 team, including costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays. He shared two photos with the post, highlighting Hays’ incredible work on the movie. In one of them, an as-yet-unidentified actor appears in the Boomerang costume. There has been speculation that Esfandi’s character is Boomerang in the movie. But the individual appearing in Cretton’s post doesn’t resemble Esfandi, seemingly disproving the rumors.
However, given how secretive Marvel Studios is, it’s unlikely that Cretton will reveal a major casting detail on a social media post about something relatively unrelated. It’s possible that the individual in the Boomerang costume is simply a stunt performer, and Esfandi does portray the antagonist in the movie.
Further, the list of announced villains in Spider-Man: Brand New Day also includes Tarantula. Unlike Boomerang, whose mask leaves the lower half of his face exposed, Tarantula’s mask completely covers his face, giving him a more concealed appearance. Accordingly, even if Esfandi’s character isn’t Boomerang, he can potentially be Tarantula.
Cretton directed Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a script by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and Justin Kuritzkes. The story takes place four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home in a world that has forgotten that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. The cast includes Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle / Punisher, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan / Scorpion, and Sadie Sink.
It comes out in U.S. theaters at the end of this month, on July 31.
