Ryan Gosling’s Massive Sci-Fi Hit Is Showing Who’s Boss on Streaming Now

Ryan Gosling‘s latest sci-fi movie has completed its victory lap from cinemas to streaming. It shot to the number one spot on Prime Video within days of its digital debut. The blockbuster, which got global acclaim from enthusiastic audience chatter rather than franchise recognition, now dominates viewership charts at home just as it did at the box office.

Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary dominates Prime Video after its streaming debut

After defying the odds in its box-office run, the year’s biggest sci-fi movie, aka Project Hail Mary, has finally been released on Prime Video. As expected, it jumped straight to the number one spot on the streamer’s viewership charts in the United States, as per FlixPatrol.

Project Hail Mary, the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel, was available to stream from July 3. On July 5, it’s already number one, leaving behind titles like The Sheep Detectives, Superman, Despicable Me 4, and more. Subscribers can also watch the film on MGM+, which added it last month.

Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a man handed an unthinkable task: travel deep into space and somehow save humanity. Sandra Hüller co-stars as Eva Stratt, while puppeteer James Ortiz brings life to Rocky, a surprisingly endearing alien companion. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed from a script by Drew Goddard.

Moreover, box office numbers underline the scale of the achievement. The film opened to $80.5 million domestically, instantly becoming Amazon Studios’ biggest launch by beating the record held by Creed III. It later climbed to roughly $683 million globally against a $200 million budget, getting a spot among the year’s highest earners. A 94% critics’ score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes confirm the overwhelmingly positive response.

The story took an extraordinary real-world turn shortly after release. NASA’s Artemis II crew, preparing for a mission designed to travel further from Earth than any human has ventured in around 50 years, watched the film before lift-off.
