Ryan Gosling is reportedly asking for a massive payday to reprise his iconic role in Barbie 2. Such a demand is likely to affect the production and might result in the sequel being shelved.
As per the latest reports from The New York Times, the entire cast of Barbie 2 is asking for a significant pay raise. Notably, Gosling, who plays Ken, has allegedly demanded $20 million. Besides him, the other stars will have a considerable increase in their pay. This will be coupled with additional cash inflow from the cast’s backend participation.
Under such circumstances, the production of Barbie 2 might face some significant setbacks. While many sources have pointed out that the demands of Gosling and others are justified, the risk of the sequel getting shelved is very much on the cards.

Gosling’s request for a $20 million sum will surely impact production. That’s because, alongside the newly announced MCU’s Ghost Rider, Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig, and Noah Baumbach are all set for a pay hike. Robbie, who played the titular lead in Barbie, was estimated to earn approximately $50 million in 2023. Thus, an increase in that amount might cause problems, making the overall production expensive.
Barbie had a production budget of $145 million. However, due to the overwhelming response from fans, the movie collected $162,022,044 in its opening weekend. According to data provided by The Numbers, it grossed $636,785,476 at the domestic box office. It also collected $810,900,000 from worldwide markets, bringing its overall gross to $1,447,685,476.
Barbie also received a total of 436 nominations and 215 wins. The movie had seven Oscar nominations, including one for Gosling in the Best Supporting Actor category. The movie’s song, What Was I Made For, won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song).
