Olivia Wilde says ‘screaming match’ reports with Florence Pugh were not true

In a recent interview with The Cut, Olivia Wilde opened up about the media frenzy she experienced while making Don’t Worry Darling. Among the series of speculations that surfaced at the time was a rumor that she had a heated exchange with the movie’s leading star, Florence Pugh.

Shortly before the movie’s release, Vulture reported that a “blowout argument” occurred between Pugh and Wilde during production. The report cited insider sources claiming that Pugh allegedly got “fed up with the director’s frequent unexplained absences.”

Speaking with The Cut, Wilde has now firmly denied the speculation. “I’ve never had a screaming match on my set. I was never not available on set. I wanted to be like, ‘None of this is true,” the actress and director emphasized.

She added, “I was told, ‘Don’t say a fucking word. Just go out there and smile.’ I resent that, but it taught me it’s not the way I want to handle things.”

Wilde recalled the experience as bitter, stating that Hollywood has “robbed me of my naïveté for sure.” The Booksmart director added, “I deeply hate the feeling of being misunderstood, too.”

Wilde also recalled advice she received from her close friend Jennifer Garner that helped her through that turbulent period. “She said it’s like you get cast in a soap opera by the public,” the actress shared. “And they assign you an obvious archetype: the damsel in distress, the good girl, the pretty girl. I became the full-on villain.”
