Olivia Wilde Reflects on Don’t Worry Darling Release Chaos

Olivia Wilde has reflected on what happened during the filming and promotion of Don’t Worry Darling in 2022, including reported tension with co-star Florence Pugh and heavy tabloid scrutiny over her relationship with Harry Styles.

The 42-year-old recalls being advised to remain silent and composed, saying, “Don’t say a f**king word. Just go out there and smile.” While she resented the approach, she says it ultimately taught her how she doesn’t want to handle such situations.

The media highlighted her relationship with co-star Harry Styles, who is about ten years younger than her, along with alleged tension between Pugh and Wilde, creating widespread negative buzz.

In an interview with The Cut, published on June 24, the actress described her two-year relationship with Styles, 32, which ended in November 2022, “loving and wonderful and joyful.” While talking about the rumors, she said, “I have never had a screaming match on my set. I was never not available on set. I wanted to be like, ‘None of this is true,” referring to a September 2022 Vulture report that alleged Wilde and Pugh had a “screaming match” during the film’s production.

Wilde expressed Hollywood “has robbed me of my naïveté for sure,” adding, “I deeply hate the feeling of being misunderstood.” “They assign you a clear archetype: the damsel in distress, the good girl, the pretty girl,” Wilde said. She noted that she was initially cast as “an object of desire,” but believes that in recent years her public image shifted, adding, “I became the full-on villain. Like Cruella.”

During an appearance on Call Her Daddy, Wilde recalled that “people were f**king pissed” about the 10-year age gap between her and Styles, reports People. Wilde said fans’ parasocial attachment to him played a role, describing it as a difficult responsibility he handles well, and added that people seemed to disapprove regardless of her actions during the relationship, saying, “It’s almost like the happiness made them mad.”

According to Elle, the former couple first met on the set of Don’t Worry Darling in September 2020, but they were not seen together publicly until January 2021, when they were spotted holding hands at Styles’ manager’s wedding. Their relationship began after Wilde ended her nine-year engagement to Jason Sudeikis in early 2020, with whom she shares two children. They officially split in November 2022 after nearly two years together, with the breakup described as a mutual decision.
