An upcoming Tom and Jerry movie has received a major plot update from screenwriters Rashida Jones and Will McCormack. They have also drawn an expected comparison between their upcoming movie and La La Land, the Oscar-winning 2016 musical romance film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
Rashida Jones and Will McCormack discuss Tom and Jerry movie
Jones and McCormack recently spoke about the Tom and Jerry movie they are developing for Warner Bros. Animation during an interview with Variety. According to the outlet, Jones and McCormack view the dynamics between the iconic fictional cat and mouse as a relationship comedy. Variety further reveals that in the movie, after being rescued by “do-gooders who eventually fall in love,” Tom and Jerry set out on a mission to destroy each other and their connections with their owners.
McCormack elaborated, “Tom and Jerry do whatever they can to kill the other or to break up [their owners]. It’s a rom-com in the style of La La Land. Why are these characters fighting so much? Because they want to be seen, and they want to be loved. The logline of our film is literally ‘Love is worth fighting for.’”
The La La Land comparison seems to underscore how Jones and McCormack’s script approaches Tom and Jerry’s relationship. The animated franchise is one of the most beloved and enduring IPs of all time. The very first entry in the franchise is a short called Puss Gets the Boot, which came out in 1940 through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Notably, Ted Turner acquired MGM in 1986, only to sell it a few months later. However, he kept the studio’s movie library (via The Los Angeles Times). As a result, Tom and Jerry eventually became a Warner Bros. property.
At the time of this article’s composition, Jones and McCormack’s Tom and Jerry movie doesn’t have a release date.
