A24 & HBO Team up for Knicks Championship Doc From Hollywood A-Lister

A new multi-part documentary series will chronicle the New York Knicks’ historic championship journey. A24 and HBO have officially partnered on the project, backed by one of Hollywood’s iconic actors.

Ben Stiller announces Knicks doc after NBA championship win

Ben Stiller confirmed he is set to direct the docuseries, which traces the full arc of the New York Knicks that led to their first title in 53 years. The actor and filmmaker shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Couldn’t be more excited to make this doc with @a24 and @hbo about the NY KNICKS!!!!!! #LETSGOKNICKS.”

A reported logline stated the project will offer “unprecedented NBA access, never-before-seen footage, and a definitive look at one of basketball’s most iconic stories.”

Ben Stiller elaborated on the project at the Knicks stars Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart’s Roommates podcast. “I’m really excited to announce that we are officially making a documentary about the New York Knicks for HBO. And doing it with A24 and full cooperation of MSG and NBA,” he said. He explained the documentary would span “all eras of the Knicks,” adding, “There’s a culmination here of something that has been going on for a long time.”

The announcement comes after Stiller had become a viral fixture throughout the recent playoffs, frequently spotted courtside shooting moments on his phone. After the announcement, one fan commented on X, “Can’t wait. We’ve been following you while documenting all of this. Going to be epic.” Stiller indicated the videos will be part of the series, with production set to continue into next season.

He also plans to interview players, including Brunson and Hart. The timeline, he said, stretches “over the next year,” having started “a little bit before the playoff run.”

The native New Yorker was among a constellation of celebrities attending the Finals. When the final whistle blew in Texas, Stiller walked onto the court, still filming, to celebrate the franchise’s first championship since 1973.
